Representing Sunway College: Udit Mahato’s Journey at the IIT Bombay Summer School 2024

In June 2024, Udit Mahato, a proud graduate and employee of Sunway College Kathmandu, had the incredible opportunity to represent Nepal and Sunway College in person at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay Summer School. Attending the intensive course on Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, and Generative AI, Udit joined thirty to forty international students from around the globe for an enriching academic experience led by the esteemed Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya. Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, with his vast experience in machine learning and natural language processing, made the daily sessions deeply insightful. His monumental contributions to Indian language processing and cognitive linguistics are truly remarkable, offering all attendees an exceptional level of mentorship and academic rigor throughout the program.

Curriculum and Core Topics Covered:

  • June 24: Introduction and Foundations including POS Tagging, Parsing, Sentiment Analysis, Word Embeddings, and N-gram Language Models.
  • June 25: Neural NLP Models including Feedforward Nets, Backpropagation, and Transformers.
  • June 26: Pre-trained Large Language Models including BERT, GPT series, LLaMA series, Gemini, and Mistral.
  • June 27: Multimodality covering Vision and Language Models along with Stable Diffusion.
  • June 28: Generative AI including Neural Machine Translation, ChatGPT, and detailed Sentiment and Emotion Analysis.

Campus Life and Experience:

Beyond the rigorous academic sessions, the vibrant IIT Bombay campus left a lasting impression with its lush greenery, energetic student life, and state-of-the-art facilities that created an inspiring environment for learning. Udit also had the wonderful chance to explore Mumbai, where the city’s diverse culture, bustling streets, and delicious local cuisine made the stay completely unforgettable. From savoring traditional Vada Pav to experiencing the rich history, Mumbai truly lived up to its reputation as the city that never sleeps. Learning alongside such a diverse cohort of international peers made the entire journey significantly more enriching.
